November BUILD day at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park
Submitted by jrykowski on Wed, 11/19/2008 - 4:09pm.
Starting up trail building in mountain biking zone of L.L. Stub Stewart State Park...
We need your help more than ever! The more volunteers we have the more single-track we'll get on the ground!
Will be splitting efforts on Saturday, November 22nd -- part of volunteer team will be harvesting timber from a local area resident for building materials, and the remainder will be focused on continued build out of the yet to be opened mountain biking zone at Stub Stewart State Park.
Building on mountain biking zone has been on hold since last year, so this is exciting to be able to start the build process up again. We'll be working on both clearing Caddy Whomper maintenance access corridor as well as benchcutting adjacent single-track.
Check-in at Clayhill Horse parking area at 9am towards top of the park (stop at Welcome Center if you need a map of the park or directions). Please carpool if you can. If you aren't sure where the project site within the park is located, then ya probably aren't going to be able to find us off in the woods without a guide (it's deep into mountain biking zone which is currently not open to public and not signed/not on maps, etc... if you'll be coming late, please email volunteer@westsidetrailfederation.org so we can be sure to have a guide come back to Clayhill to lead you to project site).
Don't forget your work gloves, snackage/water, and some warm socks to change into at the end of the day! Tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your favorite excavation tool.
Check http://pumpclub.org or http://westsidetrailfederation.org for more info (RSVP'ing thru either W.T.F. or PUMP calendar would be helpful also so we get an idea of a minimum number of people coming to help).
Future build days scheduled for Stub Stewart (these are on the PUMP calendar):

is anyone riding after the build session?
Yes, there's a carpool
Yes, there's a carpool forming...
(posted by Amy Singmaster to PUMP listserv) "A few of us are carpooling from Portland for the Stub Stewart work party. If you're interested, meet at Gateway at 7:45 a.m. (RSVP or we'll skip that stop) and Cornelius Pass Roadhouse at 8:15 a.m."
Most definately _always_ rain (snow) or shine... I'm hardcore (or stupid... pick one).
Yes, some plan to ride after build session- although personally, as the trail volunteer coordinator for build days... it's preferred ya just leave yer bike at home when doing a build day (kinda just, well, rude... ya know?)
Yes, carpooling
sounds like you've made
sounds like you've made plan for an 8:15 - 8:30am pickup window? (saw on the email list ya changed to 8:30am time)

Results of 11/22/2008 Stub build day
Early morning focused on intro to the project, tool safety, and getting volunteers with tools in hand out to the project site.
Steve Kruger, park trail manager, lead the first task group for starting work on section of corridor after 2nd drainage area. Team made short work of this section. There was quick 15 minute hiking tour of part of mountain biking zone for volunteers new to project area.
About 11:30am, the second task group reassembled at the end of where single-track had been constructed last year (prior to project hold). This group was lead by Joe Rykowski (newly elected volunteer project coordinator for both W.T.F. and PUMP). Focus was on cutting ~250 yards of new 24" single-track from Cedar tree log over to the first flat section of trees (where we'll build a series of grade reverals i.e. "pump track" style to control water erosion). This construction is part of the approved Master Plan / Trail Plan for mountain biking zone (it is adjacent to an existing log skid road which will be used for maintenance/emergency access - mountain bikers will obviously enjoy surfing the single-track...).
We were done by about 2pm.
Brand new section of narrow brown ribbon flowing along contour of hill thru the woods past cedar tree.. Next section ready for December build day!
The volunteer trail builders who came were salivating over new section of trail we'd completed that day. There's a lone cedar tree we routed the trail past with some great small roots to add a dash of technical challenge. It's trail that just begs to be ridden.
Our goal is by June 2009 to complete the single-track within mountain biking zone down length of Hares Canyon and tie into existing shared-use trails back over on westside of the park. This would allow for a "grand opening" of the mountain biking zone as part of National Trails Day / State Parks Day with 2-3 miles of new single-track plus 2 miles shared-use trail (a 4-5 mile loop). This also lines up with Oregon Parks & Recreation trail plan to have bridges constructed (over drainage areas) so that the Caddy Whomper maintenance/emergency access cooridor would be open by June as well (a good thing when users are enjoying the single-track in area).
Upcoming build days scheduled for December 2008... (more to come in Spring!)...
