BLM Seeking Input on Plans for the Sandy River Basin

BLM Seeks Public Input on Plans for Sandy River Basin "Located in Portland’s backyard, the Sandy River is an important ecological and recreational resource. The Bureau of Land Management, Salem District would like to invite you to a public meeting to provide input on plans for stewardship and possible recreation development in the Sandy River Basin. In the past 15 years, the BLM has acquired nearly 6,000 acres of public land in the area. Combined with existing holdings, the BLM Salem District now manages 14,850 acres within the Basin."

This proposal is very exciting since mountain bikers through IMBA, PUMP and your comments, we can shape brand new trails close to the Portland area. If you couldn't attend the meetings you can still send in your comments to the BLM through the attached comment form. The preferred option by PUMP and IMBA is option "C" that would provide the most trails possible. You can also add comments if you are interested in seeing particular types of trails such as Freeride or DH trails.

We will have more info as this project progresses.

Would you like more mountain bike trails close to Portland?

All you have to do is let your voice be heard.

It only takes 2 minutes to print the simple form, fill it out, and mail it.

Comment form:   http://www.pumpclub.org/files/SandyRiverBasincommentform.pdf

The goal is to get at least 100 mountain bikers to send in their comments by 9/18.

Personally, I am excited about this new trail.  I have seen the concept plans and the trail possibilities are impressive.

This is a new trail system currently being developed.  The function and design of the trail will be tailored to fit the needs of the users groups who respond.  If you want a new mountain bike trail, send in your comment form now.  Please motivate your fellow biking friends to do the same.

From Zach at BLM:

Thanks for the interest in this planning project and your willingness to take the time to comment on the proposed plan alternatives.

The Environmental Assessment (EA) for this plan will be released on August 20th.  The public comment period will last for 30 days and come to an end on September 18th.  An electronic version of the EA will be posted on-line starting August 20th at the following address:        http://www.blm.gov/or/districts/salem/plans/sandy_river_index.php

The EA will contain the same  proposed trail, facility and restoration alternatives that were presented at the open houses on August 5th and 6th.

I've included an electronic version of the comment form that was distributed at the open houses.  The comment form  can be filled out and sent to the address listed on the back of the document, you should only need to include postage.  Also, if folks would like to email responses they can send them to me directly at: Zachary_Jarrett@blm.gov

Let me know if you have any additional questions or need more information.

Thanks,

Are the docs posted?

I read through the vision doc and have tried to find the Environmental Assessment, but don't see it yet. Also - where is the "option C" talked about in the orginal text of this post?

I'm sending in the comment form - what can we do to get more PUMP members to do this? I'm willing to make calls if that will help.

It was interesting to read that the Zigzag Ranger District is doing a multi-use trail project but needing money to complete. Anyone have a sense as to how much money and what (if any) work has been done to help with that?

This all seems very positive.
