Horning's Hustle MTB Season Opener
Portland Racing is kick-starting the 2008 OBRA MTB Series close to town with the 2nd edition of the Horning's Hustle MTB Season Opener. April 6, 2008
This early-season mountain bike race will be held at Horning's Hideout, located in the forested foothills just outside North Plains (only a 35' drive from downtown Portland).
More something like a MTB circuit race than a traditional XC MTB race, riders will do multiple laps on a 5 mile coursefeaturing a lot of up and downs over fire roads, primitive cat tracks, some single track descents and grassy pastures. Add to the mix a coupleof "huckable" logs, a creek crossing (featuring a bridge of sorts) anda clover leaf course lay-out, and you know you're in for a lot of fun. Check out the course map to get a rough idea of what we are talking about!
The compact course should make for a spectator-friendlyrace. So bring your friends and families. Hey, they can even cast theirfishing lines in the local pond, while you are suffering your way upthe hill... To top it off, we'll have music, hot drinks and food and a bonfire to keep everyone warm. In good tradition, we'll close the day with awardsand we'll raffle off a bunch of cool prizes.
So dust off your bike, start hitting the trail, and join us on Sunday April 6th to kick off the season in style!
Horning's Hustle - Review
Ted Dodd
Can you say MUD, MUD, MUD.
Even though the weather was sketchy there was a fair number of riders that turned out for the race. As for the course, it kind of sucked. There was a new addition to the course which could have been cool if it would have been built correctly. Instead it was done with a bulldozer sometime recently. Thus the fresh soil combined with poor construction and a lot of water made it a mess. This section was cursed by every rider/hiker as the sloppy conditions made for a slimy scamble up each hill and a crazy out of control downhill.
If I were asked to do it again, I would say hello no! This was the second year for this event. I would have hated to be part of the first year as I heard it was even worse.
Q - If the first year was a mess, why did did the people I talk to come out for a second year? Wishful thinking that things would be better???
